He who tries to lead foolish people onto the path of wisdom and righteousness using sweet, nectar-like words of advice, is virtually attempting to bind a wild, fierce elephant with the tender, fragile fibers of a lotus stalk. He is trying to cut or pierce a hard diamond using the soft edge of a Shirisha flower petal, and is striving to turn the vast, salty ocean sweet with just a single drop of honey. In essence, trying to reform an ignorant or stubborn person through gentle advice is an impossible and futile task.

The state of a self-respecting and wise person is just like a bunch of flowers. A bunch of flowers has only two fates—either it sits honorably on the heads of all people, or it withers away unnoticed in the forest itself. Similarly, a man of self-respect either attains the highest position of honor in society or fades away in isolation without bowing down to anyone, but he never compromises his dignity.

Look brother, there are five or six other highly respected and powerful planets in the sky, like Brihaspati (Jupiter); yet, the mighty Rahu bears no enmity towards them. This king of demons, of whom only the head remains, chooses to swallow only the two most radiant luminaries—the Sun and the Moon—on specific celestial days. In essence, truly powerful and proud individuals only challenge opponents who match their own high stature, ignoring the lesser ones.

Self-control is the cause of humility; through humility, excellence of virtues is attained. People are drawn toward a man who abounds in virtues, and the affection of the people is the very source of prosperity.

It is no surprise that one who does not understand the excellence of another's virtues always speaks ill of them. Just as a forest-dwelling woman discards the precious pearls found in an elephant's temple and instead wears a garland of common seeds (Gunja).

A lion's cub, even if it is very young, pounces only upon mighty elephants whose temples are wet with rut. This is the very nature of those who are strong and spirited; for age is truly not the criteria for valor and brilliance (true strength and courage depend on innate spirit, not on age).

Giving charity in secret, welcoming a guest who arrives at home with great respect and eagerness, remaining silent after doing a favor or good deed for someone, but openly praising the favors received from others in a public assembly, showing no arrogance even when blessed with immense wealth, and speaking of others without insulting or humiliating them; who could have taught good and virtuous people this extremely difficult vow, which is as perilous as walking on the sharp edge of a sword?
Wealth is like the dust on one's feet, and youth is like the rapid flow of a mountain river. Life is as fleeting as a drop of water and as transient as foam. If Mother Earth herself eats the crops, if a mother kills her own son, if the ocean transgresses its bounds, if fire burns the earth, if the sky falls upon the heads of people, or if food itself becomes poison—similarly, if the ruler himself commits injustice, who is capable of stopping him?

Whatever wealth—be it little or great—the Creator has written upon one's forehead (destiny), one will surely attain it even in a barren desert, and not a bit more even on Mount Meru (the golden mountain). Therefore, be courageous and patient; do not behave in a pitiful, begging manner before the wealthy. Look at the waterpot—whether it is dipped in a well or in the vast ocean, it can only hold the same amount of water (equivalent to its own capacity).

Those who treat me with contempt should know that this effort of mine is not for them. Someone with a kindred spirit will surely be born, for time is endless and the earth is vast.

The proper spending or charity of earned wealth is its true protection; just as letting out the excess water accumulated inside a lake through an outlet (spillway) is the only way to safeguard that water and the lake itself. (In essence, if the water in a reservoir is not allowed to flow out when it overflows, the dam breaks and everything is destroyed; similarly, if earned wealth is not shared through charity or utilized well, it is bound to be lost or ruined.)

I meditate upon the child Mukunda, who smiles gently, shines with brilliance, constantly captivates the minds of people, and plays the flute most sweetly.

O Cloud, after comforting mountains scorched by the sun, cooling forests distressed by wildfires, and filling hundreds of rivers, the fact that you are now empty is indeed your greatest glory.

A distressed mind always finds delight in a subhashita; upon hearing one, the mind craves to hear another. Since subhashitas can influence both the ignorant and the wise, people must maintain a collection of them.

Interesting news, pure knowledge, and the extraordinary fragrance of musk; like a drop of oil on water, these three spread irresistibly on their own across the earth.

Let noble caste or lineage sink into the netherworld (hell), let the multitude of virtues sink even lower than that, let character plunge down from the highest mountain cliff and be destroyed, let high birth be burnt to ashes in fire, and let a thunderbolt instantly strike down valor, which behaves like an enemy; we only need 'wealth' (money). For, without this single entity of wealth, all these other virtues and qualities become as worthless and insignificant as a tiny blade of grass. (In essence, it satirizes society by showing how all human virtues are deemed useless in the absence of money.)

The sun, without being asked, causes the lotus pond to bloom; the moon, on its own, makes the multitude of night-blooming white lilies blossom; and the cloud, even without being requested, pours down water upon the earth. In the exact same manner, virtuous and noble people are always naturally intent upon doing good to others, without waiting to be asked or requested. (In essence, doing benevolence to others is the inherent and spontaneous nature of the righteous.)

The virtuous have one tongue, the snakes two and the creator Brahma has four. For the fire exactly seven are fixed, and six tongues belong to Kartikeya; Ravana had ten, the serpent-king Sheshnag has two thousand tongues but in the mouth of the wicked there is not any certainty to the number of tongues such as a lakh, a hundred, one or one crore.

You were smelled, repeatedly kissed, licked, and then chewed; finally, you were cast away on the ground with a disinterested mind. O precious gem (fruit), do not grieve over this. It is your good fortune that the monkey, in his eagerness to see your inner essence, did not crush you into powder.

This essence of wise sayings never undergoes change, nor does it ever become tasteless. It is not diminished even when consumed intensely by many people. It destroys dullness, brings relish, and provides satisfaction. Truly, the essence of Subhashitas surpasses all other juices.

After death, wealth remains on the ground, cattle stay in the stable, the wife follows up to the doorway, and kinsmen to the crematorium. The body is left on the pyre; on the path to the next world, the soul departs alone, followed only by its deeds (karma).

Fire burns brighter when the fuel is stirred; a serpent raises its hood when provoked. Generally, a living being regains its true glory and power when challenged or moved to anger.

In the company of the good, faults turn into virtues; but in the mouth of the wicked, virtues turn into faults—this is not surprising. A great cloud drinks salty water and turns it into sweet rain, whereas a snake drinks milk and only vomits unbearable poison.

The beauty of the ears is enhanced by listening to sacred knowledge, not by earrings. The hands look beautiful through charity, not by bracelets. Similarly, the bodies of virtuous people shine through acts of benevolence, not by applying sandalwood paste.

There is a spot on the moon, thorns on the lotus stalk, poverty in the virtuous, and black cobras on the sandalwood tree. The one who made the ocean's vast water undrinkable is indeed a Creator lacking in judgment.

What is the use of a cuckoo's song once spring is gone? What is the point of a coward carrying many weapons? What is the value of a friend who turns away in times of trouble? And what is the use of the life of an illiterate man?

Attire is indeed essential for perceived worth; prosperity abandons the poorly dressed. Seeing Vishnu in fine yellow silks (Pitambara), the Ocean gave him his daughter (Lakshmi); but seeing Shiva as an ascetic (Digambara), he gave him poison.

Just as gold is tested in four ways—by rubbing, cutting, heating, and beating; similarly, a person is tested by four things—their knowledge (learning), character, virtues, and actions.
Poverty is dignified by patience; ugliness is graced by good character. Poor quality food is improved by being served hot, and simple/shabby clothes look decent when they are clean and white.

Begging destroys a person's entire greatness or importance instantly. Even Lord Vishnu, when he desired to ask for alms, had to become 'Vamana' (short/small).

Everything old is not necessarily good, nor is a poem faulty just because it is new. Wise people examine both and then choose the better one, while a fool's intellect is led by the opinions of others.

A fierce wind does not uproot the soft blades of grass that bow low. It only strikes down the tall and mighty trees. Similarly, the great show their prowess only against those who are equally powerful.

We are satisfied here with garments made of bark, and you with your wealth. The contentment is equal in both cases, with no real difference. He is truly poor whose greed is boundless. When the mind is satisfied, who is rich and who is poor?

He who possesses wealth is considered high-born. He is seen as a scholar, a learned man, and a connoisseur of virtues. He alone is deemed an eloquent speaker and handsome. Indeed, all virtues seek refuge in gold (wealth).
